Understanding Ultrasound Visits at Rosh MFM

Why You May See Separate Copays During Your OB/GYN Appointment

Many patients are surprised to learn that their OB/GYN visit and ultrasound appointment may be billed separately—even when both occur at the same time and location. At Rosh Maternal-Fetal Medicine, we believe transparency is essential, and we want to clearly explain how this works and why it benefits you.

One Visit, Two Specialized Providers

Rosh MFM provides advanced prenatal ultrasound and maternal-fetal medicine services at select OB/GYN offices. While our services are delivered in the same physical office as your OB/GYN, Rosh MFM is a separate medical practice.

We lease space within OB/GYN offices so patients can receive comprehensive care in one convenient visit—rather than traveling to multiple locations on different days.

This model allows you to:

  • See your OB/GYN and ultrasound specialist in one appointment

  • Avoid unnecessary travel and scheduling delays

  • Receive coordinated, high-quality prenatal care

Why Are There Two Copays?

Because your OB/GYN and your ultrasound are provided by two different medical practices, each provider bills insurance independently.

This means:

  • Your OB/GYN visit has its own copay

  • Your ultrasound visit with Rosh MFM has a separate copay

This is similar to visiting a specialist within a hospital or medical building—each provider bills for their specific services according to your insurance plan.

Copays at Rosh MFM Locations

If you are seen at a Rosh MFM OB/GYN location, where both your OB/GYN care and ultrasound services are provided by the same practice, there is typically only one copay for your visit. If you are seen at an ultrasound-only location, where your OB/GYN care is provided by a separate practice and Rosh MFM performs the ultrasound, your insurance may apply two copays—one for the OB/GYN visit and one for the ultrasound—since the services are billed by two independent providers.

Why This Model Benefits Patients

Although it may feel confusing at first, this structure is designed to improve patient care and convenience.

Benefits include:

  • Same-day care: No need to book separate appointments

  • Expert imaging: Ultrasounds performed by maternal-fetal medicine specialists

  • Seamless coordination: Your OB/GYN and ultrasound provider collaborate on your care

  • Reduced delays: Faster diagnostics and clinical decision-making

“I’m Not Pregnant—Why Did I Have an Ultrasound?”

Many patients are surprised to see an ultrasound charge because they believe they are not pregnant. This is very common. Ultrasounds are used for many medical reasons—not only pregnancy.

OB (Obstetrics)

Ultrasounds may be used to:

  • Confirm or rule out early pregnancy

  • Evaluate pain or bleeding

  • Check gestational age or fetal heartbeat

  • Rule out ectopic pregnancy

Some ultrasounds are done before a patient even realizes they are pregnant.

MFM (Maternal-Fetal Medicine)

Specialized ultrasounds may be ordered to:

  • Monitor high-risk pregnancies

  • Evaluate fetal growth or anatomy

  • Check placenta or cervical length

  • Monitor medical conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure

GYN (Gynecology – Not Pregnant)

Ultrasounds are very common even when a patient is not pregnant, including for:

  • Pelvic pain

  • Irregular or heavy periods

  • Ovarian cysts or fibroids

  • IUD placement checks

  • Fertility or hormonal evaluations

How This Model Saves You Time, Money, and Stress

While having two providers in one visit may initially raise questions about billing, this integrated care model often saves patients money and significant inconvenience overall.

Fewer Days Off From Work

By coordinating your OB/GYN visit and ultrasound on the same day and in the same location, you avoid:

  • Taking additional time off work

  • Using extra sick or personal days

  • Losing income due to multiple appointments

For many patients, the indirect costs of missed work can be far greater than a copay.

No Extra Travel or Transportation Costs

Separate appointments often mean:

  • Additional driving time

  • Parking fees

  • Public transportation costs

  • Coordinating childcare or coverage multiple times

Receiving both services in one location helps reduce these hidden expenses while making your day significantly easier.

One Coordinated Scheduling Experience

Because Rosh MFM works directly within your OB/GYN’s office:

  • You don’t need to coordinate between multiple scheduling teams

  • You avoid duplicate phone calls and follow-ups

  • Your care is streamlined and better coordinated

This eliminates the frustration many patients experience when juggling multiple offices, portals, and appointment systems.

Faster Answers, Fewer Delays

Same-day imaging means:

  • No waiting weeks for a separate ultrasound appointment

  • Faster review of results

  • More timely clinical decisions by your care team

That efficiency can prevent repeat visits, unnecessary delays, and additional costs down the line.

The Bottom Line

Although your OB/GYN visit and ultrasound are billed separately because they are provided by two distinct medical practices, having both services coordinated in one visit often results in meaningful savings of time, money, and effort—while delivering higher-quality, more efficient care.

Insurance Transparency Matters

Insurance plans differ widely in how they apply copays, deductibles, and coinsurance. While we always aim to provide estimates when possible, final patient responsibility is determined by your insurer.

If you have questions about your coverage:

  • Contact your insurance provider directly

  • Ask our billing team for clarification—we’re happy to help
