Prenatal Care Doctor in New York: What to Expect at Every Stage
Prenatal care is the ongoing medical attention you receive throughout pregnancy to track your health and your baby’s development.
A prenatal visit typically includes a check of your blood pressure, weight, and baby’s heart rate, along with any tests or screenings appropriate to your stage of pregnancy. Think of each pregnancy checkup as a checkpoint designed to catch concerns early and keep everything on track.
Your appointment schedule follows a predictable routine. Monthly visits continue through your second trimester, then move to every two weeks from week 28 through week 36, and weekly from there until delivery.
What Is Prenatal Care?
Prenatal care encompasses the full spectrum of medical monitoring, testing, education, and emotional guidance a pregnant patient receives from conception through birth.
At your first prenatal visit, we conduct a detailed review of your medical history, a pelvic exam, and routine blood and urine tests. All lab work and results interpretation happen in-house, so you get answers quickly and in one place.
Throughout pregnancy, routine screenings check for conditions that can affect you or your baby. This may include gestational diabetes, anemia, hepatitis B, sexually transmitted infections, blood type and Rh factor, and bladder or kidney infections. These tests happen at specific points in your pregnancy according to established medical guidelines.
Why Prenatal Care Matters
Regular prenatal care plays an important role in reducing the risk of complications for both mother and baby throughout pregnancy. Early detection of conditions such as gestational diabetes or preeclampsia gives physicians the opportunity to respond before those issues become more serious. Prenatal visits also create time for meaningful conversations, where patients can ask questions, work through concerns, and feel more prepared for the stages ahead.
Genetic screening is another important component of prenatal care. A first-trimester blood test can detect multiple pregnancies and screen for chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome.
Patients with a family history of hereditary conditions, a previous baby born with a genetic disorder, or a high-risk pregnancy may benefit from additional genetic testing. Our certified genetic counselor works directly with patients to assess risks, explain options, and help guide decisions with care and without pressure.
Advanced Ultrasound at Rosh MFM
Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than radiation, making it safe at any point in pregnancy. Most patients receive a detailed anatomy scan around 18 to 20 weeks, which examines the baby’s organs, confirms growth and gestational age, and often reveals the baby’s sex.
Rosh MFM uses advanced 3D and 4D ultrasound technology between twenty-seven and thirty-two weeks of pregnancy. A 3D scan creates a still image that shows your baby’s facial features in clear detail. A 4D ultrasound captures live video, which shows movement such as yawning and stretching in real time.
Our physicians also use 4D imaging to evaluate moving structures like heart valves, which adds another level of diagnostic detail for high-risk pregnancies

Your first prenatal visit includes a comprehensive review of your medical history, a pelvic exam, and routine blood and urine tests. You can look forward to the convenience of having all of your labs and interpretation of the results done in-house.
Your prenatal appointments follow a regular schedule. You’ll have an exam once a month until your third trimester, every two weeks from weeks 28 through 36, then every week until your baby arrives. At every prenatal appointment, your baby’s growth and heart rate, and your weight and blood pressure are checked.
If health concerns arise during your pregnancy or you have a high-risk pregnancy, you’ll need more frequent prenatal visits.
Routine tests are performed at specific times during pregnancy to check for health concerns that can affect you and your baby, such as:
A blood test routinely performed in the first trimester detects multiple births and screens for chromosomal disorders such as Down syndrome. If you have a family history of hereditary diseases, you’ve had a baby born with a genetic disease or birth defect, or you have a high-risk pregnancy, you may choose to get additional genetic screening.
The team at Rosh Maternal & Fetal Medicine specialize in genetic counseling, screening, and testing. If you have any concerns, they determine your risks, explain the tests, and help guide your decision.
Ultrasound is safe because it uses sound waves rather than radiation. This type of imaging can be used at any time during your pregnancy to examine your baby’s growth, but it’s often done during the second trimester around 18-20 weeks. By this time, ultrasound shows the baby’s organs, confirms age and growth, and may reveal the baby’s sex.
Women who receive prenatal care at Rosh Maternal & Fetal Medicine also have access to 3D and 4D ultrasound, which may be done when you reach 27-32 weeks. With 3D ultrasound you can get a static three-dimensional image of your baby that clearly shows his or her face.
A 4D ultrasound delivers live streaming video of your baby that captures movement, like the baby yawning. Your doctor can also use 4D to evaluate moving structures, such as heart valves.
