Understanding Obstetric Care in New York

Obstetric care covers all medical attention a patient receives from conception through the postpartum period. Routine prenatal care includes scheduled exams, nutritional guidance, blood pressure monitoring, fetal heart rate checks, and management of existing health conditions such as diabetes or thyroid disorders.

After delivery, medical care continues with monitoring for infection, hemorrhage, and gynecologic complications. Obstetric care in New York focuses on the entire pregnancy experience as one connected process. Physicians follow each stage closely so that no important detail is overlooked.

Reasons for an Obstetric Appointment

Patients seek obstetric care at many different stages of their pregnancy journey. Some patients schedule their first visit immediately after confirming a pregnancy. Others seek a second opinion after receiving concerning test results from another provider. Many patients are referred due to complex or high-risk pregnancy conditions that require specialized attention.

Common reasons to schedule an obstetric appointment with our team include confirming pregnancy and establishing care, managing chronic health conditions during pregnancy, addressing unexpected symptoms, and pursuing advanced genetic testing or specialized imaging.

General Prenatal Care Services

Routine blood work is performed throughout pregnancy and includes a complete blood count, blood typing, and tests for diabetes, rubella, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, and sexually transmitted infections.

Genetic screening to assess the risk of certain birth defects also forms part of standard prenatal care. Our certified genetic counselor works directly with patients to interpret results, answer questions, and guide decisions without pressure or confusion.

High-Risk Obstetrics and Complex Pregnancy Conditions

High-risk obstetrics represents one of the most specialized areas of our practice. Our physicians carry advanced training in managing pregnancies complicated by maternal health conditions, fetal abnormalities, multiple gestations, preterm labor, and recurrent pregnancy loss. Patients travel from across the country to receive care from our team, particularly for procedures that require experience.

Advanced genetic procedures available at Rosh MFM include:

  • Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS): Performed between 10 and 14 weeks, CVS removes small tissue samples from the placenta to test the baby’s genetics at an early stage of pregnancy.
  • Amniocentesis: Amniotic fluid containing fetal cells is withdrawn and analyzed to screen for genetic conditions, assess fetal lung maturity, and detect infection.
  • Cordocentesis: A specialized test examining blood drawn directly from the umbilical cord to identify fetal abnormalities with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Carrier Screening: This testing identifies whether one or both partners carry genes associated with hereditary disorders such as cystic fibrosis. It can take place before or during pregnancy and is especially recommended for patients with a relevant family history.

Maternal Medical Conditions During Pregnancy

Existing health conditions require careful coordination during pregnancy. Our physicians manage a wide range of maternal medical conditions, including gestational diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, autoimmune conditions, and cardiac concerns.

Managing these conditions well throughout pregnancy protects both mother and baby, and our team has the experience to do exactly that.

Delivery and Postpartum Care

As delivery approaches, patients receive detailed preparation for the upcoming birth experience. Birth planning discussions include expectations, pain management options, and delivery logistics. Each element of the delivery process is reviewed so patients feel prepared and informed.

After delivery, care continues with monitoring for infection, hemorrhage, and gynecologic concerns. Recovery remains an important phase that receives continued medical attention. The care team remains available to address questions and monitor healing progress

Advanced 3D and 4D Ultrasound

Three-dimensional and four-dimensional ultrasound are available at Rosh MFM from 27 weeks onward. These advanced scans assess cardiovascular structures and fetal anatomy with a level of detail that standard ultrasound cannot match.

Many parents also request 3D and 4D imaging simply to see their baby’s face and capture moments of movement before birth. A 3D scan produces detailed still images, and a 4D scan delivers live video that can capture a yawn, a stretch, or a kick in real time.

Complete Obstetric Care Q & A

Q.

What should you expect from complete obstetric care?

A.

Your routine prenatal care covers all of your medical care during your pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum period. During pregnancy, this includes everything from prenatal exams to nutritional care and managing health concerns such as diabetes. After delivery, your care continues: You’re monitored for infection, hemorrhage, and urinary or gynecologic issues.

The team at Rosh Maternal & Fetal Medicine go beyond routine obstetric care. They’re also experts in managing high-risk pregnancies and women carrying multiple babies, as well as taking care of obstetrical, medical, or surgical complications of pregnancy.

Q.

What specialized genetic tests are available?

A.

Blood tests are routinely performed throughout your pregnancy to test for health problems that affect the mother and her baby. A complete blood count, blood typing, and tests for diabetes, rubella, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, and sexually-transmitted infections are all standard.

Genetic screening to determine the risk of certain birth defects is also part of routine prenatal care. The doctors at Rosh Maternal & Fetal Medicine also have a certified genetic counselor on staff, and they specialize in advanced genetic screening and procedures such as:

Cordocentesis

This is a genetic test that examines blood from the umbilical cord for fetal abnormalities.

Amniocentesis

Amniotic fluid contains fetal cells and chemicals produced by the baby. It can be withdrawn and used for genetic testing, as well as to assess fetal lung maturity and infection.

Carrier screening

This testing determines whether you or your partner carries a gene for certain disorders, such as cystic fibrosis. It can be done before or during pregnancy and is recommended if you have a family history of a genetic disorder.

Chorionic villus sampling

Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is a procedure that removes wispy projections of the placenta, which are then used to test the baby’s genetics. This is done early in your pregnancy, usually around 10-14 weeks.

Q.

Can you get advanced 3D and 4D ultrasound?

A.

Three-dimensional and four-dimensional ultrasound are available at Rosh Maternal & Fetal Medicine. As part of your obstetric care, these ultrasounds can be used after 27 weeks to diagnose the health of your baby, including assessing his or her cardiovascular structures.

Many parents request their own 3D and 4D ultrasounds so they have exceptional images of their baby before birth. Three-dimensional images show the baby’s face with the clarity of a photograph, while 4D delivers live streaming that can capture movement, like the baby yawning.
